As an Advanced Apprentice (Level 3) on this programme you could be based in Maintenance*, the Stamping Group* or Site Services* (further information at the end of the article). You will be asked to indicate your preference during the application process.

Requirements:

GCSE Maths and English Language at level 4 (C) or plus three further GCSEs at level 4 (C) or higher, including one STEM (science, technology, engineering or maths) subject or an Engineering vocational qualification at level 3/90 credits/540 GLH or higher.

*Maintenance

The Manufacturing Maintenance teams at Halewood are responsible for the ongoing monitoring, maintenance and control of all equipment used in the manufacturing process, as well as driving process and facility improvements. Apprentices have a great opportunity to learn a number of key skills across multiple technology areas:

Body

As a Body Construction Maintenance Technician, you will be part of a large team responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of a heavily automated facility with over 800 robots. You will carry out preventative and predictive maintenance tasks whilst enjoying the opportunity to develop your skills across a wide range of technical equipment including robotics, PLCs, electrical controls and industry-leading joining technologies such as servo gun welding, laser welding, riveting and sealing technologies.

Paint

Producing modern luxury surface finishes for customers requires a keen focus from the Maintenance teams in Paint operations. You will carry out preventative, predictive and planned activities to ensure that automation facilities deliver consistently on a daily basis and will conduct immediate response investigations where required to ensure continuity of production. There will be opportunities to extend your multiskilled training in areas such as PLC programming, robot programming and servicing, electrical controls, mechanical servicing, variable speed motor control, chemical & material dosing and pump technology.

Trim & Final (T&F)

The painted vehicle body shell comes to life in Trim & Final, becoming a piece of modern luxury for the customer. You will be part of a highly skilled group maintaining and improving advanced equipment with a diverse range of functionality. There are over 100 different pieces of technology – from robot cells, laser markers and conveyor PLCs through to fluid filling equipment, vehicle validation testing rigs and water test facilities. 

Stamping Group (Press Shop)

At the heart of the Press Shop, you’ll become either a Mechatronics Maintenance Technician or a toolmaker, working with a range of facilities including state-of-the-art press lines and a high level of automation and robotics. You could be responsible for maintaining all Press facilities, including servo presses, hydraulic presses and crane and conveyor systems to ensure our manufacturing operation runs smoothly.

Mechatronics Maintenance Technicians support our in-house machine wellness strategy. You will be involved in undertaking major strip-down, refurbishment and repair activities to improve equipment availability and performance. In addition, you’ll use your problem-solving skills to carry out proactive, preventative and predictive maintenance whilst diagnosing and fixing faults on complex machinery and equipment.

As a Toolmaker, you will have the opportunity to learn cutting-edge maintenance techniques using world class facilities. You’ll enjoy operating and maintaining very large mechanical presses and associated components along with the latest technology electrical and electronic control systems, giving you a steep learning curve.
