New Apprenticeships at Liverpool John Lennon Airport
Confidence is returning to the International travel market. Gone are traffic light systems and more passengers are flying again. Liverpool John Lennon has taken on four new apprentices as they plan for the future.
Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) usually sees over five million passengers take to the skies every year. Keeping aircraft flying safely is highly regulated and requires professional engineers that can inspect and install new components as part of a regular maintenance schedule of the equipment at the airport from runway lights to instrument landing systems.
The airport advertised its four apprenticeship opportunities recently. Interest and competition for the four places was high. The successful candidates were BSM Engineering Apprentice, Luke Whitehead, Airfield Ground Lighting Engineering Apprentice, Jack Boyce, Air Traffic Engineering Apprentice, Ben Howsam, and Finance Apprentice, Sean Hughes.
Luke, Jack and Ben will be studying a Mechatronics Maintenance Technician Course, while Sean takes an Association of Accounting Technicians Course, as part of their apprenticeship qualifications. The mechatronics course includes understanding mechanics, electronics, software and optics to support the on-going planned maintenance of complex automated equipment.
LJLA has been a long-time advocate of apprenticeships, recognising the benefit to young people looking for their first step into the world of work and for the business in being able to nurture and develop high calibre employees. Many former apprentices have subsequently gone on to full time permanent positions and have developed successful careers at the Airport. Riverside College in Halton has been chosen as the local training provider to deliver the theory element of the apprenticeships. LJLA selected them based on their reputation for providing high quality courses and as an ideal fit for apprentices working at the airport. The college was instrumental in helping to choose the two local engineering apprentices and will be providing ongoing support over the next four years of their studies.

This important scheme is a fantastic opportunity and gives young people the skills to develop a career here at the Airport, whilst they in turn will no doubt bring fresh ideas and make an important contribution to Airport operations.”
